The Centurion's Faith
Once upon a time, Jesus was walking through a city by the sea when some of His kinfolk approached Him concerning an officer, a centurion, in the Roman army. Now, these kinsman wanted Jesus to heal a dear, dear servant of this Roman. They explained what a good man the centurion was and how he had done many great things for them. Why, he had even paid for their church building. [The Lord seemed to have nothing to say on the subject of this Gentile's goodness.]
Jesus, of course, went with them, but before reaching the man's home, he was met by some of his friends. They were carrying a message from the centurion that said, in essence, "Lord, don't put yourself out on my account. I'm not even good enough for you to enter my home or even for me to come to you. But if you'll just say the word, my servant will be healed.
You see, I understand your authority. I also tell my soldiers where to go and what to do and when to do it and they do it."
Now this impressed the Lord! So much so, that he turned to his kinsmen who were following him and said, "I haven't seen this much faith, even among my own people!"
Then the centurion's friends returned to his home and found the servant who had been sick now completely healed.
